August 16 was the 40th day that Xu Qiankai, the rescuer at Rongchang Railway Station, was injured and hospitalized. On the same day, Xiao Xu learned the good news that his right leg would be able to walk on the ground with a prosthetic leg in 2-3 weeks.

In the morning, the Chongqing Disabled Persons' Federation invited Wu Jixiang, a professor of the Rehabilitation Department of Southwest Hospital of the Army Medical University, to the Rongchang District People's Hospital to consult on Xu Qiankai's recovery and evaluate the time for installing prostheses.

Xu Qiankai, 29, saved an old man crossing the railway while performing shunting operations on the afternoon of July 6, causing his right leg to be amputated at a high level. During his hospitalization, Xiao Xu actively cooperated with the treatment and was able to walk on crutches on the 13th day of hospitalization. Now he can stand on one leg. The residual limb of his right leg swings back and forth and left and right for about an hour every day for rehabilitation training to prepare for the installation of a prosthetic limb. Wu Jixiang believes that Xu Qiankai's initial treatment and recovery are very good, and he can start the process of installing prosthetic limbs in two or three weeks. Event review:

Mother Tang Chuanrong is wiping sweat from her son

At 15:49:47 on July 6, on the railway track at Rongchang Station, he jumped off the sliding car that was braking suddenly and ran for 5 seconds with his life. At the moment of life and death, he dragged his mother-in-law, who was about 5 meters away from the front of the car, back from the life-or-death line of the railway track.

However, his right leg was crushed by a wheel below the knee. He said: "In an emergency, when you see your elders in danger, you don't have time to think. The only reaction is to save people."

Who is he? The 29-year-old shunting chief, Xu Qiankai, a young man from Yongchuan, is an ordinary member of the Communist Party of China and a veteran. When the incident occurred, he was commanding and looking out on the train at the Rongchang Station of the Chengdu Railway Bureau.

Yesterday, reporters from Chongqing Morning News rushed to the scene and tried their best to reconstruct what happened.

Before the incident, Xu Qiankai was at the shunting station. A mother-in-law did not notice the car traveling on the left and suddenly stepped onto the railway track. He immediately pressed the emergency stop button. Then he blew the whistle to remind her, and seeing that her mother-in-law didn't react to avoid it, she shouted again...

But the mother-in-law still didn’t hear it. 29-year-old Xu Qiankai jumped out of the car decisively at the critical moment and carried out a life-or-death rescue. The mother-in-law only suffered some superficial injuries. And he lost his right leg forever.

Five seconds between life and death, he jumped out of the car to save people

Xu Qiankai is a station attendant at Rongchang Station of the Chengdu Railway Bureau. In March 2016, he was transferred from Zunyi Depot to Rongchang Station.

On the afternoon of July 6, Xu Qiankai carried out shunting operations as usual. At 15:49:34, Xu Qiankai, who was working, saw a mother-in-law suddenly appear on the right front end of the electric locomotive more than 10 meters away.

Xu Qiankai, who was standing on the escalator of the electric locomotive, noticed this situation immediately and immediately pressed the stop button. He whistled and shouted loudly to remind the old woman walking on the rails to leave quickly!

The old woman seemed not to have heard and stepped onto the railway track and continued walking. Even if the emergency brake button was pressed, the train still slid 50 meters at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour before stopping.

When he was about 5 meters away from his mother-in-law, Xu Qiankai shouted loudly, jumped from the car to the ground, and rushed towards her mother-in-law. He picked up her mother-in-law with both hands, stepped on the railway track with his left foot, stepped out of the railway track with his right foot, and threw her mother-in-law out from left to right, successfully rescuing her mother-in-law.

On-site surveillance showed that from the time Xu Qiankai jumped out of the car to when he pulled his mother-in-law back, the whole process took only 5 seconds.

Unfortunately, because the distance was too close, after Xu Qiankai rescued the person, his right leg instinctively entered the railway track when he turned sideways and exerted force. Because he had no time to evacuate, his right leg was ruthlessly crushed by a wheel. The car involved skidded for more than 40 meters before stopping.

Urgently sent to hospital, high amputation of right leg

After hearing Xu Qiankai’s cry for help, his colleague Chen Zhourui, who was on duty with Xu Qiankai, rushed to the scene of the incident.

"When I arrived at the scene, Xu Qiankai was already lying on the ground." Chen Zhourui said that Xu Qiankai's right leg was broken by the moving train from the knee down.

Next to Xu Qiankai, there was an old woman about 65 years old sitting, her expression dull and frightened.

Xu Qiankai looked back at his right leg, then turned to ask the old woman sitting beside him: "Is there anything you can do? Is there anything you can do?"

Seeing that his mother-in-law was not seriously injured, he struggled in pain and grabbed the gravel on the railway, waiting for colleagues and medical staff to come to rescue.

Deputy station director Bai Ying and shunter Chen Zhourui rushed to the scene and contacted 120 emergency services according to the situation. After the ambulance arrived, because Xu Qiankai lost too much blood, the emergency personnel immediately carried out emergency treatment and promptly sent Xu Qiankai and his frightened mother-in-law to the nearest Rongchang District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital for rescue.

Xu Qiankai, who was rushed to Rongchang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, entered the operating room at 4:45 pm that day and completed the high amputation of his right leg at 7 pm.

Transferred back to Rongchang, just to spend more time with my parents

Before being put into the ambulance, Xu Qiankai kept groping with his hands. After putting away the walkie-talkie in his hand, he then groped for a large bunch of keys from his body and handed them to his colleagues on duty.

"He was handing over the work." Chen Zhourui said. In the panic, Chen Zhourui himself forgot to hand over the work, but Xu Qiankai remembered it.

That afternoon, Xu Qiankai’s parents rushed from Yongchuan to Rongchang after receiving the news. At that time, Xu Qiankai was performing high amputation surgery in the operating room.

After the operation, Xu Qiankai woke up and saw his mother standing by his side. His first words were: "Mom, I'm sorry!"

"My baby only turned 30 in December this year." Father Xu Ronggui couldn't help crying. His son had been a soldier for two years. After he was discharged, he changed his job to work as a shunter at the Zunyi depot. In March last year, he applied to be transferred back to Rongchang Station of the Chengdu Railway Bureau.

"Just to be closer to home and stay with us." His mother, Tang Chuanrong, is a retired employee of a coal mine in Yongchuan. A few years ago, their family moved from Rongchang Guangshun to Yongrong Community in Yongchuan District.

When talking about his son's accident, Tang Chuanrong didn't want to mention it more. He turned his back and wiped away tears while choking. She just said to reporters: "He is my good son!"

Tang Jun, Xu Qiankai's attending physician, said that it was rainy on the day of the incident. When the injured was brought in, the wound was seriously contaminated. Fortunately, the injured was relatively conscious.

According to the postoperative review, the vital signs of the injured were stable, and preventing wound infection and suppuration is the current focus of treatment.

He said

"I don't regret sacrificing a leg to save a life."

Yesterday, the reporter saw Xu Qiankai lying on the hospital bed in the orthopedics department outside Rongchang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At present, he is in relatively good mental condition in all aspects.

"This old woman suddenly appeared on the railway tracks." Xu Qiankai recalled the scene at that time. He said that when he saw someone walking on the railway tracks, his first reaction was to press the emergency brake button and shout loudly to get her to leave.

"But no matter how much I shout, it's like the mother-in-law can't hear me." Xu Qiankai said.

When he saw that the electric locomotive was about to hit the old woman, Xu Qiankai had only one reaction in his mind - save her!

"This is a human life, a living life. If I don't save it, then this person's life will be gone." Xu Qiankai said. This is the first time he has encountered such a situation where the train does not avoid the train after the whistle is blown, and it is also the first time he has raced with the train to rescue people from the tracks.

After Xu Qiankai's operation was completed, the rescued old woman made a special trip to Xu Qiankai's bed, knelt on the ground and kept thanking him for saving her life.

When asked whether Xu Qiankai regretted his decision, he replied: "Sacrificing a leg to save a life, I have no regrets!"

But as the only son in the family, Xu Qiankai said that he felt very guilty when facing his parents.

"The person I admired most since childhood was my father, and my father also worked on the railway." Xu Qiankai said that after two years of studying in the army and being exposed to it in his family since childhood, saving people has become his instinct.

Colleagues said

"It's no surprise that he saves people, he is very considerate of others"

Filial, kind, careful, cheerful, responsible, and capable in business.

Regarding Xu Qiankai, most of his colleagues and leaders commented on him this way. Xu Qiankai's rescue of the old man moved all the employees at Rongchang Station, but was not surprised.

"Xu Qiankai is very kind to us and considers us very well." Xu Qiankai's colleague Yuan Chenyi said.

On weekdays, when Xu Qiankai meets someone who has finished the night shift, he will also thoughtfully buy breakfast for them. When arranging work on weekdays, we will also choose the most labor-saving and time-saving solution for them.

A female cook at the station had to cook and had no time to take care of her children in kindergarten. When she was not at work, Xu Qiankai spontaneously helped the female cook with her children.

Li Sheng, the team leader of the same team as Xu Qiankai, commented on him, "This young man is very nice, down-to-earth, hard-working, and very enthusiastic. He especially likes to think about others."

The day before the incident, Xu Qiankai went to Li Sheng's house for dinner. At that time, Xu Qiankai joked and asked him to help introduce his girlfriend.

"We are still planning to play football together someday." Li Sheng said that two days before the incident, Xu Qiankai bought a new pair of sneakers.

"If it were me, I might not be able to do better than him." Colleague Chen Zhourui said frankly.

"He is a hero, and most of his WeChat friends are helping people"

Kind, brave and down-to-earth, these are the impressions of Xu Qiankai’s childhood friend Mo Xiaodan on him.

Mo Xiaodan and Xu Qiankai grew up together and are also junior high school alumni.

Since he is two years older than Xu Qiankai, Mo Xiaodan would affectionately call him his younger brother.

Mo Xiaodan works in a hospital and has long been used to seeing separation between life and death, but Xu Qiankai's sacrifice of himself to save others gave her a new definition of the word "hero".

"He is my hero, and I am sincerely proud to have such a brother." Facing the reporter's interview, Mo Xiaodan expressed his views.

"He can't bear to see others suffering and is always very enthusiastic about helping others." Mo Xiaodan said that she often follows Xu Qiankai's WeChat Moments. Mo Xiaodan discovered that many of the contents were forwarding missing person notices, charity donations, etc.

Don’t let tragedy happen again!

At 10 o'clock yesterday morning, reporters came to the scene of the incident.

The cloth from Xu Qiankai's blue pants was also left at the scene. There are eye-catching yellow slogans such as "No walking, sitting or lying on the railway line" posted next to the entrance on one side of the station.

"Both people and vehicles can pass safely on it. However, a few households choose to cross the railway tracks for convenience." Li Yi, the station director, said that there is an overpass 150 meters away from the incident.

A mother-in-law revealed that the rescued old man had hearing problems and lived near the overpass.

"Many people are not aware of the dangers of crossing the railway tracks, and they only regret it when something happens." Bai Ying, deputy director of the station, said that although the station posted many eye-catching slogans and station employees reminded them at any time, many people still turned a blind eye.

Xu Qiankai said that he hopes everyone can abide by the rules and prevent tragedies from happening again. He warned everyone not to cross the railway in order to take a shortcut or go under the train. Passengers should stand outside the white safety line when getting on or off the train. Children, especially, should not play near the railway.
