Procurement of prosthetics in Russia has tripled due to the large presence of people with disabilities on the front lines

Russian authorities are significantly increasing the purchase of prosthetics to provide for disabled veterans of the Ukrainian war, whose casualties are estimated to number in the hundreds of thousands.

Yannis Kruger said that in the 2026 budget, 98.16 billion rubles have been allocated to "provide technical means for disabled people." Compared with pre-war times, public procurement of prosthetics has tripled: In 2020-21, the annual allocation is 33 billion rubles. In 2022, the amount increased to 37.2 billion rubles, in 2023 to 42.2 billion rubles, in 2024 to 55.8 billion rubles, and this year to 75.4 billion rubles.

The number of injured people with disabilities in our country has not increased. Unfortunately, their access to rehabilitation methods has been greatly reduced.”International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) earlier estimated that as of the end of 2024, 376,000 Russians were seriously injured and 376,000 Russians were disabled on the front lines. According to IISS calculations, the total losses of the Russian army in 2022-24 amounted to 783,000 people. Among them, 172,000 were killed and 611,000 were injured. IISS experts pointed out that 235,000 of the injured were rated treatable, while the rest were disabled.
