What are the basic elements of a calf prosthesis configuration?

The calf prosthesis is mainly composed of the following parts:

  1. Socket

    • This is one of the most important parts of the calf prosthesis, which is in direct contact with the residual limb. Its function is to accommodate the residual limb, transmit force, and provide protection for the suspension of the prosthetic limb.

    • There are many types of sockets based on different load-bearing methods and design concepts. For example, the PTB (Patellar-Tendon-Bearing) socket mainly relies on the patellar ligament to bear weight. When this kind of socket is worn, the patellar ligament of the residual limb is placed in a specific position of the socket, so that when the human body walks or moves, the force can be effectively transmitted to the prosthesis through the patellar ligament. There is also a TSB (Total-Surface-Bearing) socket, which is characterized by the fact that the entire surface of the residual limb is involved in load-bearing, which can distribute the pressure more evenly on the residual limb, avoid excessive local pressure, and is more beneficial for ensuring blood circulation at the end of the residual limb.

    • The materials of the socket are also varied. Thermoplastic sheet is one of the common materials. It has good flexibility and fit. It can be softened by heating during the production process, and then shaped according to the shape of the residual limb. After cooling, it can fit the residual limb well. The socket made of carbon fiber material has the advantages of high strength and light weight, and can provide excellent support performance for prostheses. It is widely used in some high-performance prostheses or sports prostheses.

  2. Ankle joint

    • The ankle joint is the component that connects the foot plate and the main body of the calf prosthesis, and plays a key role in the stability and adaptability of walking.

    • A fixed ankle joint is the simplest type. It has a stable structure and no moving parts inside. This kind of ankle joint is suitable for patients who do not require much ankle joint movement, such as people who mainly walk on level ground. It can provide better support.

    • The uniaxial ankle joint has a movable axis that can achieve a certain degree of dorsiflexion (the foot is hooked upward) and plantar flexion (the foot is stretched downward). This allows patients to better adapt to changes in ground slope during walking, giving them an advantage when walking on slightly undulating roads, for example.

    • The multi-axis ankle joint has the ability to move on multiple planes and can adapt to various complex terrains, such as rugged mountain roads, roads with obstacles, etc. It can provide patients with better balance and stability, allowing patients to move more flexibly in different walking environments.

  3. The foot plate

    • The foot plate is the part in direct contact with the ground, and its performance will affect the comfort and efficiency of walking.

    • SACH (Solid - Ankle - Cushioned - Heel) foot plate is a common type, with a solid interior and a cushioning device in the heel part. This kind of foot plate has a simple and durable structure, can provide good support and cushioning on flat ground, and is suitable for general walking activities.

    • The elastic foot plate has good elasticity and can store and release energy during walking. When the foot touches the ground, the foot plate will be compressed to store energy, and the energy will be released when the foot is lifted, making the step lighter and more natural. This kind of footboard is suitable for patients who have a large amount of activity and require high walking efficiency, such as those who walk for a long time or who like to exercise.

  4. Connecting components

    • Including various screws, bolts, joint connectors, etc., used to connect the various parts of the prosthetic limb tightly and firmly together to ensure that the prosthetic limb will not loosen during use and ensure the integrity and safety of the prosthetic limb.

What is the general price of calf prostheses?

The price of calf prostheses varies depending on a variety of factors. Generally speaking, the price range spans a wide range, roughly as follows:
Low-end products: The price is usually around 4,000-7,000 yuan. This type of prosthetic limb is made of relatively ordinary materials and has relatively basic functions. It can meet basic walking needs, but it may be relatively weak in terms of comfort, flexibility and durability.
Mid-range products: The price is between 8,000-20,000 yuan. Mid-range prostheses have certain improvements in materials and manufacturing processes, and their mobility or matching degree is slightly better than low-end products. Some products may have some simple adjustment functions, such as adjusting the damping of the knee joint, etc., which can provide patients with a better user experience.
High-end products: Generally priced at more than 20,000 yuan, some imported high-end calf prostheses may cost more than 50,000 yuan, or even as high as hundreds of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan. These prosthetics often use advanced materials and technologies, such as high-strength, lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, for better performance and comfort. Some high-end prostheses may also be equipped with advanced functional components such as smart joints, which can automatically adjust according to the patient's walking status, closer to the natural movement pattern of the human body.
